Fifty years later the pink bathroom was on the way out. This was, at last, the year for the great remodel. The room only 8 x10 presented some challenges as my clients wanted to add a shower and still maintain a separate soaking tub area. Having worked for them for more than twenty years I knew their policy was, do it once and do it right. I was confident we could achieve their goals.
I moved the tub to the opposite wall, added the arch above it for some interest, and managed to make a 32” shower feel like 44” by indenting three inches into the tub wall and nine inches into the end wall. This worked great, it allowed for a marble seat area inside the shower and for a marble trim detail on the outside and inside. A custom vanity with one sink looks much better and functions better. The indented storage cabinet to the left of the vanity made a more accessible use of the hall way linen closet.
Fortunately, I was on site the day we were discussing the final layout. Everyone started to worry that the bathroom was going to be too small. Nothing had changed with the size, we had essentially just traded a second sink area for a shower but everyone wanted the beautiful new bathroom to be bigger. As it happens, this house was constructed with a truss system that required no internal support walls, so in less than an hour the bathroom was ten inches wider. A reciprocating saw blade cut through the nails holding the wall to the floor and ceiling, a rubber mallet and two strong men moved it ten inches into the closet area behind it…voilà…a bigger bathroom and everyone was happy. An organized California Closet system will take care of the missing ten inches of closet that disappeared into the bathroom.
Custom wood products made all of the cabinetry and trim pieces. Exquisite craftsman, Jermy Owen executed the installation perfection.
