Undeniably, this was the poorest functioning, worst looking kitchen I have seen to date. In addition to needing to make the new kitchen function we had quite a challenge with the aesthetics. The vaulted ceiling of stained pine at first seemed impossible to work with and presented a serious balance issue. We decided to add more wood everywhere to join it rather than fight it…we added a beautiful Homer Wood hickory floor. She wanted the kitchen white; he wanted the kitchen wood so we answered both with part paint and part rustic hickory.
Aside from the issues of aesthetics the area was an odd size, 13’6” x 25’…not the easiest of all sizes for sure. We removed a closet in the living room and added the area into the kitchen to allow for a longer area of width to accommodate the island.
We planned every drawer, roll out and specialized interior to accommodate the needs of this family. 10’ Center Island of hickory and dark granite rests nicely on the hickory floor and the white painted verticals give the light and storage she was hoping for. We used light granite on the painted sidewall areas.
The custom cabinets were made by Custom Wood Products…they are as usual perfect in every way. For some reason I can’t find finished pictures but the transformation is obvious with the pictures I have. Never mind, I found some finished pictures and added them.
